Poems of Mahmoud Darwish
Mahmoud Darwish is one of the poetic pillars of the Arab world, born in Al-Birweh, a quaint village in the Galilee, Palestine. Amid the mass deportation of Palestinians from their cities and lands, massacres of civilians, and the razing to the ground of hundreds of Palestinian villages, he and his family fled to Lebanon in 1948. Returning “illegally” to their country the following year, they were subjected to military rule and emergency regulations that the newly founded state of Israel established over expropriated Palestinian land. They were given the status of “present-absent alien,” a status that marked the poet from that point onwards. Darwish is the recipient of many international literary awards. In 2001, he won the Lannan prize for cultural freedom. He currently lives in Ramallah.
